Child Criminal Exploitation – Why Language Matters

Date: Monday, 24th Jun 2024 | Category: General

NSPCC have published a blog as part of the ‘Why language matters’ series, on why it’s important for professionals to consider the language they use when talking about child criminal exploitation. The blog explores how the terms ‘recruited’ and ‘working’ minimise children’s experiences of criminal exploitation. It also discusses how professionals can approach the topic of criminal exploitation with other professionals and the children they work with. Find out more here.

Here in Staffordshire the Safeguarding Children Board, through their Learning Hub model, are seeking to assess how we

“Use the voice of the child to gain an understanding of their experience as they journey through the system in order to improve outcomes for children and young people”.  We have engaged with practitioners across the Partnership to identify good practice, challenges and potential solutions on how to improve how we listen and understand the voice of children who are at risk of or experiencing criminal or sexual exploitation or go missing.  We will also be engaging directly with children with the support of a young person who has lived experience.  The findings from the learning hub will feed into the child exploitation and missing strategic group and help inform the revised strategy and outcomes.
